This 2-hour technical session will include lunch and a tour of a data center.
The event will focus on the decision-making process on where to build mega data center facilities and the potential impacts. Speakers will present the challenges that public agencies encounter associated with zoning, environmental impacts, and public acceptance, as well as the high demand for water, energy, and other resources during operations.
Speakers
- Joao-Pedro Ferreira, Acting Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Studies, Regional Economist, and Lecturer, University of Virginia, Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service (org/). He was involved in the JLARC data center report in 2025 and more recent research around the Great Lakes.
- Jonathan Bluey, Assistant Professor of Practice, The Myers-Lawson School of Construction, Virginia Tech. He teaches a course on Data Centers. (invited)
